Effective for all student visa applications made from 23 March 2024, the Australian Government has introduced the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. This requirement replaces the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criterion for student visas.
Under the GS requirement, applicants are no longer obliged to demonstrate a temporary intention to stay in Australia. Instead, they must prove their genuine commitment to studying in Australia, with a focus on understanding that studying in Australia is the primary purpose of their visa. The GS criterion also recognises post-study pathways / applicant’s intention to permanent residency for eligible graduates, contributing to Australia’s skilled workforce.
The GS assessment whilst focusing on student’s genuine intention to study in Australia will consider various factors including but not limited to the applicant’s circumstances, previous study record, course progression, immigration history, compliance with visa conditions, employment history, ties to home country, financial circumstances, and the relevance of the chosen course to an applicant’s future goals and prospects. Additionally for applicants under 18, the intentions of their parent, legal guardian, are also taken into account.
Along with the new GS requirements changes have also been made to English Language Requirements for Student visas, to ensure students can transition smoothly into their courses.
The new English language requirements are as follows:
- The minimum score required for a Student visa from an IELTS test score increases from 5.5 to 6 (or its equivalent).
- The minimum score required to undertake a packaged ELICOS from IELTS increases from 4.5 to 5.0.
- For students studying English only through ELICOS, there will be no change.
- The test score required for students undertaking university foundation or pathway programs that deliver reputable English language training will be IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent).
Generally English language level requirements are dealt with by your Australian education institution at the time of offer/enrolment.
